What is 3D printing?

3D printing is a process whereby a 3D design is turned into a real object. First, software is used to slice the 3D design into layers, and then the design is printed layer by layer on a 3D printer.

Because each object is built up uniquely, 3D printing is the choice for people and companies who want to make unique and customized items, or small series of objects. In contrast, other processes, such as injection moulding are much better at making thousands or millions of copies of something cheaply.

The correct technical term for 3D printing is Additive Manufacturing. However, the public almost exclusively uses the term 3D printing.

How can I start designing my own 3D products?

Our community will be able to help you here (hyperlink to it).

If you want to try some packages there are some great 3D packages.  We would recommend: Blender, an open source free 3D animation package. Rhino is a versatile commercial tool that exports directly to STL. Maya is a powerful high end commercial modelling, animation and visual effects tool (think Hollywood). 3ds Max is a more accessible modelling tool made by Autodesk the same company that makes Maya.

What software should I use if I’m a beginner in 3D design?

- Google provides a free, easy to use application called Google Sketchup. This tool allows you to design everything you want in 3D, through an intuitive interface, and offers free 3D models for download.

- Wings 3D is another free 3D application; the website has a forum, which is very useful to find answers to all your questions.

- Blender is available for free, but targets a more experienced audience.

- Newcomer Sculptris works like you are sculpting directly from clay.

- Make Human is a free specialized in human body 3D designs and lets you play with all body and face details. Amazing!

- GLC Player is a free application which allows you to easily view 3D models. It’s lighter than regular modelling software so comes in handy when you just need to quickly check a 3D model before uploading it
